Fornillo
History
This
is the beach of Fornillo, the second in size in Positano. It
is called Fornillo because at one time there were many ovens
(forno = oven).
This was at one time the weak spot of the town. On the main beach the
Positanese had organised an excellent defence system against invaders
with sand bag, arms and sentinels; the pirates were thus beaten or
at least discouraged from attacking the town. Once however three ships
anchored near Positano and the captains astutely decided to attack
the town from the side where the defences were lacking. They did so
and successfully attacked the town and from then on the Positanese
always feared attacks in that area.
